Three of our second year webelos went to Elk Lick Scout Reserve and participated in the Western Gate District Klondike Derby. The cubs participated in seven different stations including fire building, knots, block and tackle, orienteering and team building games. They came in third place for both of the team building games.
Our Pack held its 2010 Pinewood derby on January 19th at our sponsor, the Allegany American Legion. We had a great deal of the cars, from both the boys and the leaders. Many people delighted to see Mr. Burroughs’ Mater mobile, and Mrs Burroughs’ pinewood hearse. The Boys ran double elimination rounds to find the fastest car in each den. Mason K. , Blaze H., Kyrell S., and Garrett M. were the winners in the Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos Den respectively, and Mrs. Harrison won the leader round. Finally, Malachi K. won the best car over-all with his tiger mobile.
On a cold and snowy night, our pack gathered for a bountiful feast prepared by all the families. We celebrated the season, handed out some advancements, achievements and awards. And then, as we finished our meal, sleigh bells were heard, and we were treated to a special visitor. In his sack ofgoodies, he had pinewood derby cars and treat bags for all the scouts and thier siblings.
The weather cooperated at the last minute and gave us a good base of snow so that our Pack enjoyed a day of sledding on the hill in front of St. Bonaventure cemetery. The cubs had a great time going down, and about half as much going back up. Even Mr. O’Dell and Mrs. Burroughs made several trips down.
With the holidays approaching, and an ever greater strain put on our food pantries our Cub Scouts helped families by collecting food to help the Creekside Chapel pantry. The gathered a large collection of cans and box goods \that filled a shopping cart, this will go a long ways to helping those at need this holiday season.
Our cubs gathered on a nice November Saturday afternoon and they learned about many outdoor skills. They learned how to read a map, what to do if they got lost, and the importance of the buddy system. They also went over back-country first aid and learned about the leave no trace awareness program. The cubs had a good time, and learned a lot.
Our scouts gathered at the american Legion for our haunted halloween party. They played many games, including the eye-ball relay, pin the nose on the great pumpkin, and the had mummy making races with Mrs. Burroughs and Mrs. Walsh serving as our mummy models. We played several games of Halloween bingo, decorated pumpkins, and ate several desserts. We handed out a large amount of candy. All the boys came in their costumes, and several prizes were handed out for the costumes. Josh B. won for scariest costume, Blaze H. had the most original, Sullivan O. had the best overall costume, Mrs. Harrison, dressed as Kate Gosselin was the most original adult costume. We had our own rain man as Connor W. won both of the candy corn guessing jars.
This years pocorn was a very big success, as we sold $3600 in popcorn. That is a 50% increase over last year.We had several boys sell over $300 individually, and 5 boys filled up a page to earn the marshmallow shooter. The boys raffled of a chance to hit either Mr or Mrs Burroughs, and Aaron V. connected with Mr. Burroughs’ face. He had it all over his glasses, beard, hat and hair. Congradulations to all the boys who worked hard to sell popcorn and fund the pack for the year.
Our pack sent 13 boys to Elk lick scout reserve and the participated in the Western Gate district fishing derby. In the morning, the Tigers, Wolves and Bears tried thier luck to catch the big one. Some of the boys caught over five fish apiece!! In the Afternoon, the Webelos came out and fished till dinner time. All the boys had a great time, as the weather slowly warmed up for an pleasant fall day.
